Solar Return · year chart · Solar Arc · directions
One number: the distance the progressed Sun has travelled since birth, very near a degree for every year of life. And the whole natal chart is slid forward by it. The chart's own geometry never changes: a natal square stays a square. What changes is where each directed point now falls against the birth positions, and that is what dates a turning-point.
Directed-to-natal contacts inside orb right now: the turning-points the life is moving through.

Five working rules that keep a solar-arc reading sharp rather than vague.
Because the arc is uniform and precise, a contact within 1° is real and the charge concentrates inside the last 30′. Allow loose orbs and you will find a "direction" every single year; that is noise, not prediction.
A directed point reaching the Ascendant or Midheaven marks the visible, external turning-points: identity, career, home, the people who arrive. It also leans hard on the birth time: four minutes of error slides a directed-angle hit by a whole year. If the time is uncertain, run Rectify first.
A directed planet reaching a natal point, and a natal planet reached by a directed point, are both read. The bi-wheel above carries every exact contact, whichever way it runs.
Solar arc tells you which year and what it is about. For the day it actually fires, pair it with a transit crossing the same degree: the fast planet is the trigger. Read it next to Transits.
An exact contact carries roughly six months either side of exact, with the peak in the months the orb closes inside half a degree. A reading that feels diffuse usually means the orb was read too wide.
What the technique is, why its contacts mark turning points, and what it is for. With that in hand, the directions above read as your own story rather than a table of data.
A Solar Arc is the whole natal chart slid forward by a single distance. That distance, the arc, is how far the Progressed Sun has travelled from its birth position, and it works out at very close to one degree for every year of life. A chart at thirty has moved about thirty degrees; at forty-five, about forty-five.
Because every point moves by the same amount, the chart's own geometry is left untouched. A natal square stays a square, a grand trine stays a grand trine. What changes is where each moved point now sits against the unmoved birth positions, and a fresh contact there is what dates a turning point.
There are no retrogrades in Solar Arc, and no changes of speed. Every point advances at the steady pace of the Sun. That is what makes it the cleanest timing in the system: a uniform clock that ticks once a year.
When a moved point reaches a birth point, the technique reads it as a year the structure of a life shifts. Not a passing mood or a spell of weather, but a change of shape.
The loudest of these contacts touch an angle. A directed angle reaching a natal planet, or a directed planet reaching a natal angle, marks a year life rearranges visibly: the body, the career, a partnership, a home. The angles are where the chart meets the physical world, so when they are involved the world tends to deliver the news.
Quieter, and still real, are the contacts a moved planet makes to your birth Sun, Moon and personal planets. These read as inner restructuring: identity shifts, and changes in how you love, think and act, which then work their way outward.
Quieter still are the directed angles crossing from one house into the next. They colour the texture of a year rather than heading it.
The four angles are the heartbeat of Solar Arc work, and each one carries a domain. When an angle is touched, that domain is what changes.
The Ascendant is the body, the face, the way you move through a room. Contacts here time identity shifts that other people often notice before you do.
The Midheaven is career, reputation, the thing the world sees. It times the moments professional life changes shape.
The Descendant is the other, the one across from you. Contacts here time partnership chapters: the year someone arrives, or the year someone leaves.
The Imum Coeli is home, family, roots, the private foundation. It is the quietest of the four in public terms, and often the most consequential within.
Solar Arc does not predict the events you choose. It is not the year you decide something. It is the year the thing happens, the year you can later point back to and recognise as the moment something turned.
It is less weather and more architecture. Transits are loud and immediate, secondary progressions are slow and inward, and solar arc sits between them, showing when the structure of a life is about to change shape and which rooms are about to be remodelled.
It will not spare you the hard years or guarantee the good ones. What it offers is coherence: the shape of a life made visible, one degree at a time.
Solar arc and the Solar Return share a word and nothing else. The Solar Return is a chart cast for the moment the Sun re-crosses its natal degree each year. Solar arc is this directional technique: the whole chart moved forward by one arc. Both live in this chart's header; they answer different questions.
